"Scholars as Enablers" : Dead Sea Scroll fakes abound, and scholars admit they share the blame - Haaretz.com
Scholars as enablers
For decades we have suspected a handful of DSS scholars both here and abroad being responsible for this, not for academic reasons but simply for financial reasons. They authenticate fragments which are clearly forged and the buyers are happy and money changes hands between the forgers, the sellers and the experts. The small coterie of DSS scholars are silent, thus enabling this to continue and more shame is brought on the archaeological community. Dead Sea Scrolls are akin to an ATM and for decades the scholars and universities have remained silent. Thankfully the next generation of EU DSS scholars are speaking up. We here know those responsible, but colleagues refuse to act.
